Don’t miss out on the craic this St. Patrick’s Day! Read on for 5 ideas to bring the Paddy’s Day celebrations home.

St. Patrick's Day is usually spent celebrating in throngs at the many extravagant parades throughout Ireland. Followed by a pint (or two???? ) with friends in pubs buzzing with traditional Irish music and dance.

With the disappointment of St. Patrick’s Day parades cancelled for a second year and pubs still shut, we’ve compiled a few ideas to help with celebrating at home!

CREATE A TRADITIONAL HOME-COOKED DISH

How about starting with a traditional Irish meal? We all know the Irish love their potatoes, and colcannon is no exception - a traditional Irish dish of creamy potatoes and cabbage, the perfect accompaniment to a delicious lamb stew! Irish comfort food at its best and the perfect way to begin celebrations. Check out the recipe here.

JOIN A SPECTACULAR VIRTUAL PARADE

Dúisigh Éire! Awaken Ireland! is the theme of this year’s virtual St. Patrick’s Day Festival. An apt theme after the year we’ve all had, and an encouragement to leave the long, dark months behind us and embrace brighter days ahead. Hundreds of artists, musicians, performers and more are gathering to celebrate via a dedicated St. Patrick’s Festival TV channel that will run from March 12th-17th and will have over 100 events to enjoy with all the family. Find out more here.

CONTRIBUTE TO A 'GREEN' CAUSE

While St. Patrick’s Day is synonymous with green, why not go green in an alternative way this year? How about contributing to a green cause instead of donning the usual green attire? At Eatto, one thing we are especially dedicated to is sustainability so we’re always delighted to see people join hands for this global cause.

SEARCH FOR SHAMROCK

According to Irish folklore, St. Patrick used the three leaves of a shamrock to explain the holy trinity: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Today, the shamrock is worn out of tradition and can be found in shops throughout the country. How about foraging for shamrock on the hillsides of Ireland and taking in some of the glorious nature? Who knows you might even stumble across that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow!? There are so many beautiful places to choose from! (If you are lucky to have any of these destinations within your 5K.)

Here are some of our favourite hiking destinations:

  • Ballycotton Cliff Walk, Cork
  • Glendalough and the Spinc Cliffs, Co Wicklow\
  • The Cuilcagh Boardwalk Trail — Enniskillen, Fermanagh
  • The Barrow Way Co.Carlow
  • Diamond Hill Co. Galway

WHIP UP SOME GREEN TREATS

We know all about red velvet cupcakes but this St.Patrick's day we're going green with some delicious green velvet vanilla cupcakes topped with a festive green cream cheese icing. Find the easiest (yet delicious!) recipe here.

For each petal on the shamrock, this brings a wish your way: Good Health, Good Luck and Happiness for today and everyday

So, whether you choose to cook a comforting Irish dinner, join the fun in a virtual parade or roam through green fields on the lookout for the shamrock, we hope this St. Patrick’s Day is just as fun as those before. Lá Fhéile Pádraig sona duit!
